In recent years, school issues have become more and more important in the legal arena. Wading through confusing, often conflicting, reports about schools can be time consuming and frustrating. Often, it is difficult to determine what data is relevant, and what the crucial education issues are in a given case. This guide is designed to present you with useful information about evaluating schools, using school data, and utilizing the services of expert witnesses and consultants.

The first section looks at typical custody or residency situations and reviews how school quality considerations can influence the outcomes of custody hearings. Also provided here is a sample SchoolMatch® expert opinion, taken from an actual case in which SchoolMatch® data and skill were used to achieve winning results for our client.

The next section covers important factors to consider when evaluating school quality. Our SchoolMatch® databases and our extensive experience in collecting and analyzing data have enabled us to develop sound, effective guidelines for school evaluation. We also provide you here with an overview of state education policies and administrative structures that may affect school quality.

Not all litigation regarding schools is custody-related, of course. We include a chapter on non-custody litigation, which contains examples of cases and questions to consider. A special section focuses on questions of sexual abuse and standards of care. A sample opinion is also included.
